BRYDE'S WHALE LUNGE FEEDING IN RAJA AMPAT-CAPTURED BY DRONE

It's not uncommon to see whales in Raja Ampat, after all there are fifteen different species in the area. This Bryde's whale however, is doing something a little different what we normally see when they surface, take a breath and then dive back down. This is called lunge feeding where the whale, which feeds on plankton living just below the surface, builds up an impressive amount of speed and seemingly ambushes his microscopic prey with it's gaping mouth and scoops up tons (literally) of these nearly microscopic organisms.

I was able to capture this footage by drone in the Dampier straight of Raja Ampat over an adrenalin pumping fifteen minutes. Tracking the subject can be tricky as they build up so much speed and then stop so suddenly. To see the Omura's whale (the newest species of whale to be classified) and it's phenomenal feeding behavior click here.

OMURA'S WHALE LUNGE FEEDING IN RAJA AMPAT-CAPTURED BY DRONE

Very rare footage of an Omura's Whale (Balaenoptera omurai) feeding in Misool, Raja Ampat. These whales are often mistaken for Byrdes or Fin whales but the easiest way to identify is by the ridges on the top of the head. Omura's just have the one central ridge while the Bryde's have three.

For two days several of these rare whales were spotted just off of the boat around Misool and could be seen actively feeding throughout the day. We were able to get into the water with them and get some brief glances of them though there was so much plankton in the water they were just big grey and white shapes quickly moving past. At one point there was a large female with it's calf and it could be seen teaching it how to effectively scoop up their planktonic food. When I started filming them with the drone it offered a unique perspective into this fascinating behavior.

ARCHIPELAGO: BALI-KOMODO-BANDA SEA-RAJA AMPAT

For three years I've been filming and photographing in the Indonesian Archipelago. From Bali to Komodo through the Banda Sea and the fabled Spice Islands and into Raja Ampat. This is the very best of my aerial and underwater work in the region!

RAJA AMPAT: 2017

Raja Ampat, or the 'Four Kings' in English, is known to be the most bio-diverse marine ecosystem in the world. It's reefs teem with life of all shapes, sizes, and colors. It's a divers paradise. Every year I spend around five months diving exclusively in Raja Ampat as part of my job as a liveaboard photographer. This is a short homage to the Four Kings from three seasons and over a thousand dives in the area.
